Hackers say Sony is refusing to pay up after cyberattack

As the Sony crisis escalates,
most Japanese moviegoers are oblivious.
Have you ever heard of the movie The Interview?
Less than two miles from Sony’s Tokyo headquarters,
not a single person we asked knows about the
controversial comedy.
Behind these walls,
nobody’s laughing.
This is costing Sony hundreds of millions of dollars,
destroying relationships in Hollywood.
Hollywood reporter,
editor at large Kim Masters,
says the cyber attack is paralyzing Sony Pictures
Entertainment and could eventually force a leadership shakeup.
There is no movie in the world that could be worth this,
but certainly it’s not this
movie.
Hello,
North Korea!
Hacked emails reveal Sony executives grew increasingly uncomfortable with certain scenes
in The Interview,
which joke about the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Rand Corporation confirms to CNN,
Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Linton consulted with the global
think tank,
as also revealed in those hacked emails.
Linton is on the board,
and he asked a Korea expert to analyze how Asian audiences might
perceive the movie.
It’s not appreciated.
It’s not well understood.
And certainly not seen as particularly funny.
Longtime Asia strategist Keith Henry thinks that may be the reason Sony’s not releasing
The Interview in Japan or South Korea.
He says dark comedy often gets lost in translation.
Henry says it threatens to rattle shaky relations between Japan and North Korea.
Henry says Sony executives should have known better.
The whole idea that they would allow this to go into production is a mystery to me.
He says the heads of Sony will likely face tough questions from the Japanese government,
which is struggling to normalize relations with North Korea.
When you have Hollywood hitting up against the reality of geopolitics and diplomacy,
I think geopolitics and diplomacy should win.
