Nebraska tight end awaiting NCAA eligibility arrested in suspected burglary of vape store

Well this Husker football player still in jail tonight hours after being
arrested and accused of breaking into a Lincoln vape shop. Well police say Eric
Gilbert was caught on camera stealing more than $1,600 worth of products just
before 2 this morning. Bill Shamritz on the live desk. Rob, Julia Lancaster County
judge set the Husker tight ends bond at $5,000. He’s charged with burglary, a
felony. It’s not exactly how Matt Ruhle wanted to start his last press conference
before game day. The head coach says he found out with a phone call this
morning, really disappointed, really sad for him. Um, you know, when we took when
we took Eric, we thought we had a good, we knew we had a good group of people
that we’re going to help him through some of the issues he’s dealing with in
his life. Um, had been really proud of the job he had done in the spring and
summer. Um, but to be honest, during camp, you know, he’s had some struggles.
He’s been working to overcome them. We have a great group of people here
trying to help him.
The video of the alleged break in and arrest posted to tiktok by the owner of
F. J. S. J. S. Liquor and vape. He alerted police to an unknown person in
his business at 1 54 this morning, officers were nearby and saw a
shattered glass door. Video shows somebody browsing the shop and then
kicking in a door. Police say when they first saw Gilbert, he was shirtless and
carrying a black bag with $1,672 of stolen stuff that includes vape
products, delta eight cigars and lighters. The suspect put his hands up
when he saw police and is seen lying down handcuffed outside the store. I’m
disappointed for him and his family disappointed obviously for the business
owner and we’ll have to just work through it as we move forward.
Rule noted that Gilbert wasn’t going to factor in the Minnesota game because of
an unconnected eligibility issue. As for his future with the team, the coach
wasn’t ready to comment on that and said he needed to talk with
administration. Back to you bill. Thanks.
