The UAW launches a historic strike against all Big 3 automakers

All right.
the countdown is moving for a possible strike by up to 146.000
United Auto Workers
members against the Detroit 3 automakers.
Now.
here’s the latest in an email to employees.
still meant to say both sides have a
coverage to tentative agreement in some areas.
including health and safety.
Now.
if the union does go on strike.
eligible union members will be living off of just $500 a week.
Those who are eligible for strike pay are members on active payroll who are in good standing
and current on their dues.
They must all participate in this strike.
Now.
people who are laid off on workers compensation or receiving sicker accident benefits
Has eligible.
Today.
I got a chance to talk with a member of the United Auto Workers about how her family
is getting things in order to live off of strike pay.
I hope that we can come to a mutual agreement.
Shardaya Kim is a mother of two.
She’s been at Ford Motor Company since 2013 and is a team leader.
So.
I got hired in.
they let me know.
Ben.
right?
I was young.
I was 19.
20 that I will be starting at $15 an hour and I couldn’t make no more than $20 an hour.
Shardaya comes from a family entrenched in the auto industry.
She grew up benefiting from her mom and dad’s hard work with the big three.
Mom is going on 30 years as a tier one worker.
I had a good upbringing.
like there was nothing I wanted for anything.
Yet today.
Shardaya.
like the rest of her union brothers and sisters with the United Auto Workers.
is prepared to strike.
It’s going to be hard for people who.
I think everybody is prepared to go on strike.
We’ve been knowing about this for a while.
One of her two main concerns is getting rid of the two tier wage system.
And if you strike.
word get extended.
make sure as you just heard and say.
work with your creditors.
Now.
not later to see if they have programs.
so you can cut those payments in half or at least a little

so you can survive at least until the strike is over.
Definitely good advice.
of course we don’t envy the position that any of the workers are in right now.
Now.
it’s so tough for so many families.
especially with inflation so high and everything else we have to
deal with.
All right.
Carolyn.
Thanks for reporting on that.
